Conversation heard outside the mosque today…

This is a conversation i heard while leaving the mosque today after Jumu’ah between a brother and an Eastern European woman holding a young child and begging for money:

Woman: Money please…

Brother: (ignores her and walks on)

Woman: (enraged) I hope Allah kills you because you don’t help my child. Watch out for the rest of the day!!

Brother: Don’t have children then stupid!

  • As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,

I don’t think there’s supposed to be a moral; I think it’s probably typical of the experience of some brothers who attend mosques in certain parts of London. I know that’s how it was when I lived in Croydon in the late 1990s and attended the mosque there; we would have Romanian gypsies accompanied by their children (or babies, or dolls) saying “salaamu ‘alaikum” and begging for money in the irritating melodramatic way some of them do.

  • Salaams – Didn’t the Prophet (aws) say you should give to a beggar even id he is fat and riding on a horse? Should we not be kind, even if we do not think someone is genuine in their request for help? That’s the moral. I would have thought it was one every Muslim should be aware of.
